RESEARCH TECH 3 Immun\Micro


The Research Technician will process patient specimens for testing and/or storage, perform basic research laboratory experiments or other technical procedures at a high level of technical proficiency, and/or to develop new procedural routines and methods for clinical or other laboratory use.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Responsible for learning specimen processing and storage protocols for all projects being conducted within the Virology Quality Assurance Laboratory.

Responsible for conducting all HIV culture confirmation assays (e.g., HIV p24 Antigen EIA, RT assays, etc.), and for conducting HIV molecular assays.

Will be responsible for maintaining the tissue culture reagent area, the tissue culture area (i.e., the BSL-3 facility), the confirmation assay area, the molecular testing area, and all equipment contained within those facilities.

Responsible for maintaining continuous cell lines and producing primary cell cultures when needed.

Will need to use computer programs such as the Rush LIS (Laboratory Information System), the Laboratory Data Management System (LDMS, FSTRF, Amherst, NY) as well as any other computer programs used within the Virology Quality Assurance Laboratory. Will be required to become proficient in the operation of the freezer inventory computer program used for the entry, storage, and retrieval of specimen data.



QUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum of a BS or a MT with related experience. 1 to 2 years experience in a relevant field highly desirable. Experience in specimen processing is preferred. Good sterile technique, good laboratory technique, and strong organizational skills are required.
