~PATHOLOGIST ASSISTANT
General Summary: Oversee operations of the grossing areas of the Anatomical Pathology Laboratory. Assist the pathology residents and attending pathologists in the surgical pathology and autopsy pathology grossing areas.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
Perform surgical pathology grossing and dictation on specimens of all levels of complexity.
Implement and direct new procedures in the surgical grossing area.
Assist and provide direction to the pathology residents in taking tissue for special procedures.
Participate in training new pathology residents in grossing procedures.
5. Maintains the surgical pathology grossing area in an organized manner; ensure area meets safety and
cleanliness standards.
Maintains equipment, including tissue processors, and supply inventory in the surgical pathology grossing
area.
7. Perform frozen section preparation and staining.
8. Maintain specimen inventory; schedule specimen disposal.
Manage the laboratory staff and operations in the grossing and accession area.
Use professional knowledge and judgement to recognize problems in existing procedures and make recommendations to correct them.
Use professional knowledge and judgement to assure correct gross sampling of surgical specimens.
Meet regularly with the Attending Pathologist, Director of Laboratory Services, and the Manager of Pathology to inform them of technical and operational status of the grossing area.
Keep abreast of new technologies in the anatomical and surgical areas of Pathology.

Abilities Required:
Ability to work independently without supervision.
Ability to troubleshoot difficult cases and problems encountered.
Ability to interact with attending pathologists, pathology residents, and pathology laboratory staff in a positive manner.

Qualifications:

Education: M.S. degree in a certified Pathology Assistant program. Certification or eligibility for certification required. Knowledge of and ability to interact with computer systems required.

Experience: A minimum of internship experience as a pathology assistant required.
Two to three years of applicable experience in an anatomic pathology laboratory required.
